What's a day in the life of Brooke O’Hanley Selzer like?
Well, I am currently on maternity leave after having my second daughter, Gigi. I’m not sure if I should get into what time my day usually starts (at the moment around 3 am) or whether or not I get out of my pajamas before noon (maybe 25% of the time but I always…okay maybe 75% of the time make sure to get into regular clothes before my husband gets home from work), or how many diapers I usually change in a day (I can’t keep track). I will just focus on the special parts of my day – seeing Gigi start to smile; getting kisses from my older daughter, Ruby (almost 2) and hearing her say or more accurately yell, “I luv you! I luv you!,” and seeing her accomplish a new task for the first time and hearing her say, “I did it!;” seeing my husband, Elliott, and Ruby dance to “”All the Single Ladies” and “All About That Bass;” and eating a beautifully prepared meal by Elliott.
Favorite thing about your job?
I work for the Department of Toxic Substances Control – the agency responsible for protecting California’s people and the environment from the harmful effects of toxic substances. I am surrounded by people that are passionate about the environment. I feel that the work that we do is extremely important.
What's your greatest attribute?
I am hardworking. This attribute has enabled me to overcome any lack of talent, others’ judgments of my potential, and setbacks to accomplish my goals of becoming a professional soccer player (I played for two years in the now defunct Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) and an environmental attorney.
What's your signature style?
My current style is so out of style. I’m hoping that 2017 will bring me a new sense of style – maybe something like classic chic. Let me know if you have any ideas.
one kind of food and drink for the rest of your life. Go!
Mexican food and margaritas!
What's something that most people don't know about you?
I am afraid of the dark and spiders.
Favorite thing about living in Oakland?
Funniest moment with me that you can remember?
When I was single and looking for the man of my dreams, you and your dad reviewed and provided feedback on my online dating profile. We had a really good laugh. While I didn’t meet my Mr. Wonder, aka Elliott, online, I’m sure if he had seen my dating profile, he would have been drawn to my extremely well edited profile.
Most embarrassing moment?
When I was in fifth grade and on a field trip, I got stung by a jellyfish. To make it feel better, I had to pee on my arm in front of my classmates.
First bucket list item that comes to mind?
Go to Paris. Checked this one off when Elliott and I went with Ruby shortly after her birth. It was magical.
I dream that it might ultimately be said of me, for the contributions that I will have made towards protecting the environment, that “she has fought the good fight, she has finished the race, she has kept the faith."
