Overnight: Four Points By Sheraton Manhattan Midtown West
say Hello to Hudson Yards!
If you've been to Manhattan recently, you know that the area of Midtown (specifically 10th and 12th Avenues from W. 30th to W. 34th St.) is building up like it’s Williamsburg in 2010. It's the hub of NYC transportation services with the rail service, subway system, the West Side Highway, the Lincoln Tunnel, ferries, and buses all connecting. So it’s easy to see why hotels, bars, and restaurants are popping up all over the place. Luckily there's an escape located in the heart of this transportation mecca.
The Four Points By Sheraton Manhattan Midtown West is located around the corner from 10th Avenue on 35th St. It's a great destination if you're heading to a conference at nearby Javitz Center or if you just need a break from city life. Check in is easy at this 148-room hotel and the Hudson Bar Room is right next to the lobby so you can relax and grab a drink before making your way to the room if you'd like. In fact, they offer a great happy hour deal from 12 p.m. - 7 p.m. on weekdays.
The rooms are fairly big for New York City. Mine included a spacious Four Points signature king size bed, a nice flat screen 42-inch TV, and a sleek desk with an ergonomic chair. Mostly because I'm the laziest hotel guest ever, I certainly appreciated the lighting system, which lets you turn the side lamps, bathroom lights, and entrance lights on and off from your bedside table. The best part about the bathroom space was definitely the walk-in rain shower! The lighting was also pretty stellar. I can't tell you how many hotels opt for florescent bulbs, leaving the room with a slightly yellow glow. Not this place. I was able to do my makeup without having to run by the window to make sure I didn't look like I had a black eye. Upon check-in, I had every intention of binging on some cringy daytime TV but the bed ended up being so comfortable that I fell asleep!
Thankfully, I woke up in time to meet a friend for dinner. The lobby area was packed with post-Javitz attendees and it was fun to people watch and catch tidbits about their day. My friend arrived and we immediately grabbed a corner table at Hudson Bar Room's dining area. The waiter suggested a variety of small bites and we settled on the maple glazed brussels sprouts, sesame-honey chicken wings, parmesan fries, and a greens & grain salad. The restaurant had quite a variety of entrees to choose from - the bartender had recommended the salmon, brick chicken, and chicken dumplings but we decided to share a few smaller items. I'm definitely going back to try the dumplings - everyone around us was raving about them! After dinner, we decided to grab a seat at the bar. We got to know the bartender and the other patrons staying at the hotel, which is always fun as someone who lives in NYC. I said goodbye to my friend and excitedly hurried to my room to enjoy my comfy bed and some late night TV.
The next morning, I took advantage of the fitness center, located on the lobby level. Thankfully it was well equipped with treadmills, an elliptical machine, a recumbent bike, exercise balls, and plenty of weights. The hotel also provided towels for guests, which was nice. I was able to sweat it out for a bit but one very important thing was also on my mind: ROOM SERVICE! I ran back upstairs and ordered the classic two egg breakfast with bacon and fruit. I'm staying caffeine free these days so I also ordered some decaffeinated mint tea. The meal arrived before I could even jump in the shower! It was piping hot and the bacon was extra crispy - whoo!
Overall, this hotel is perfect if you're on the road for work or if you're looking for a little staycation. Yes, there is a bit of construction noise from 10th Avenue during the day but it's pretty normal for this area. I always come equipped with earplugs so it didn't bug me too much. The staff was super friendly and there was always coffee and snacks available by the lobby. Make sure to check out their special offers page because they have discounts like Saving 40% On Your Next Night (two night minimum), Breakfast for Two, and a Stay Longer and Save More package. Plus, you can also earn 500 SPG points every time you stay at this location.
The best part? You're so close to the 7 train (and every other kind of transportation) that it's easy to get back home. Just make sure you remember to check out!
