SF Eats: Bowl'd Acai at Spark Social
MEET ANGEL SERRATO, CO-FOUNDER OF BOWL'D ACAI IN SAN FRANCISCO.
He's the bearded Raider fan who welcomed me to his food truck with an inviting smile on a sunny afternoon in SoMA (I almost hugged him after encountering California kindness for the first time in months - guess this cynical New Yorker was ready for a West Coast break!).
After a recent trip to Hawaii, where I proceeded to down poke bowls like mercury poisoning wasn't a legit concern, I discovered my love for these healthy bowls of marinated goodness. In addition to refreshing Acai and poke bowls, Angel and his partner, Reza Morvari, are creating one-of-a-kind smoothies and healthy juices to help kick that inevitable winter cold. As two self proclaimed health nuts, Serrato and Morvari came together to bring a locally sourced menu to Spark Social, one of the cooler food truck destinations I've ever been to (cue the fire pits, swings, and double decker bus seating).
Poke Bowls & Smoothies
The Great White Poke Bowl is not to be missed. It's filled to the brim with organic brown rice, coconut oil, sea salt, wild ahi tuna, gluten-free soy sauce, orange juice, ginger, garlic, green onion, orange zest, black sesame seeds, crushed macadamia nuts, and spinach. If you're in the mood for a little kick, order it "piranha style" and enjoy their special spicy AF sauce on top. Grab a lid and throw it into your bag for later or enjoy it from the comfort of your favorite swing along with a fork or chopsticks (I opted for both). Bowls are on the pricier side, at $15, but the portions are hefty and they'll definitely fill you up.
Coffee drinkers can also get their caffeine fix in the Rocket Fuel smoothie. This amped up drink will not only wake you up, it'll keep you full until lunch thanks to filling ingredients like coffee, banana, peanut butter, vanilla whey protein, chia seed, flaxseed, and house made almond milk. Fight off those chills and stuffy noses with the Cold Assassin - a mix of grapefruit, orange, lemon, turmeric, ginger, and cayenne pepper. Just what the doctor ordered.
If you want to beat the afternoon rush, I suggest heading over in the morning for a refreshing Acai breakfast bowl. This Brazilian fruit is packed with micro-nutrients and contains a high concentration of antioxidants as well as plenty of energy benefiting properties to get you through your day. Those just starting out on this craze will want to try the Original Gangster (Acai, strawberry, banana, and coconut water) topped with granola, strawberry, banana, blueberry, coconut shavings, and honey. The adventurous acai bowl eater can test out the Green Goliath with hemp protein or the These Nuts with bee pollen.
