Friend of the Week: Robin Gelfenbien

Robin Gelfenbien

noun

/rob-ihn/ /ge-el-phen-byne/

1. Ice cream cake maker.

2. One kick-ass Auntie (also has one pretty hilarious one of her own).

3. Former Wienermobile driver.

4. Storyteller extraordinaire.

How do we know each other?

We met at my storytelling show, Yum's the Word, that features my homemade ice cream cakes and have developed an awesome friendship that centers very often around dessert. Namely, ice cream. :)

What's a day in the life of Robin Gelfenbien like?

No two days are ever the same. Since I'm a Freelance Creative Director/Copywriter, I'm always juggling my work projects with my storytelling ones. I usually try to get up early and go to the gym by 7:00. If I'm working on-site, I head to the office. If not, I'll work from home. Either way, I'm constantly thinking about details for my Yum's the Word live show and podcast as well as telling my own stories on other people's storytelling shows. Whether I'm reaching out to individual storytellers, updating the show's website, writing a script for the podcast, emailing our birthday guests about their ice cream cakes, reviewing pitches, writing my own pitches, promoting the show on social or whatever else I need to do for the show and the podcast, I'm always squeezing that work in during the week when I can and on the weekends.

At night during the week I'm either seeing or appearing on storytelling shows. Sometimes I even do non-storytelling things and go on dates or have dinner with friends. Hard to believe, I know. ;) On the weekends I try to give myself one day to have a Yum's break and relax, but depending on what's happening with the show, it doesn't always happen. For example, summer is a big time for the show because I make ice cream cakes for it, so it takes up a fair amount of my weekends as well, but it's a labor of love, so I don't see it as work.

What's your greatest attribute?

My creativity. I am so incredibly grateful for it.

Favorite thing about living in NYC?

Probably the food. :) What can I say? I'm Jewish and Italian. We're not known for being big drinkers. ;)

If you could only have one kind of food and drink for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Ice cream, of course! :)

What's something that most people don't know about you?

I meditate...when I can. :)

What's your signature style?

I go for very simple styles, but with pops of color. I love wearing purple (my signature color), turquoise and red. I also like to wear big, chunky jewelry that's monochromatic and fun and heels.

Funniest moment with me that you can remember?

I have so many all with one common denominator. Ice cream. I loved walking for miles with you in the oppressive heat and humidity last summer during my Annual Ice Cream Tour. I also loved that you were with me when I met my ice cream dealer, but possibly my favorite is the ice cream taste tests we have done with that crap they call Arctic Zone. Sooooo damn funny!

First bucket list item that comes to mind?

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

When's the next show?

As the Social Media Guru for Yum's The Word, I have to shamelessly promote the show :) Robin is an excellent and engaging host and her #icecreamcakes are beyond words. Plus, the stories are always entertaining! Make sure to mark your calendar if you're in NYC. The next show is at Le Poisson Rouge on July 12th with special guest storytellers Joel Marsh Garland (Orange is the New Black), Jordan Carlos (The Nightly Show with Larry Whilmore), and more! If you can't wait until then, make sure to download the Yum's The Word Podcast! Yum's is eagerly celebrating the premiere of OINTB Season 4 by dedicating the next three podcasts to this very compelling series. Get ready for feature stories from cast members including Jason Biggs and Yoga Jones. Plus, we've got a fascinating story from the real Larry talking about visiting Piper in jail and an interview with Catherine Curtin who plays C.O. Wanda Bell on the show. Who else is binge watching this weekend?
