Porchlight: A Bar With A Southern Accent

ATTENTION SOUTHERN GENTS & GEMS,

That's a thing, right? Sure. If a perfectly made [insert whisky drink of choice here] makes you happy then you need to make your way all the way over to the westside highway because Porchlight is serving up quality cocktails that can only be matched by its amazing food. But be warned: you may be speaking with a Southern drawl by the end of the evening.

It's not a surprise that the brainchild behind this one year-old hotspot is famous restauranteur Danny Meyer of Union Square Hospitality Group. This is the guy behind mega successful (and now publically trading company) Shake Shack as well as Marta, my absolute favorite place to get pizza. So he knows a thing or two about creating a successful business in New York City. He took time out of his busy schedule last night to attend Porchlight's 1st anniversary party and you could feel the love that he and his partners have put into the place.

The space itself makes you feel like you're hanging out inside someones pimped out barn with bookshelves filled with knickknacks that range from cocktail books and old oil cans to used board games and vintage milk bottles. It's spacious and inviting and rotating artwork pop out against the linear brick walls. There's also a back room that looks like a game room from the 1950's. It's stocked with games, cards, darts, trophies, and leather back chairs. The bar is massive and lined with so many colorful bottles and potions that it looks a witches den. These drinks definitely cast a spell on you, that's for sure.

Speaking of their drinks, they are on the pricier side but the mixologist behind the bar takes pride in each creation. It's almost as fun to watch them make your drink as it is to actually drink it. The new spring menu was released last night and let me tell ya, I'm pretty stoked about them. A few highlights include:

The best part about Porchlight is that their food is just as good as their drinks. This was actually the idea that sparked it all. The Tater Tots with anchovy ketchup as well as the thickly cut Smoky Beef Jerky are great starters. And their Warm Bourbon Bar Nuts are anything but bland. But if you want something more filling grab the warm Biscuits that are made with smoked cheddar and Tasso. The Double Trouble Bison Burger with Tasso, pimento cheese, lettuce, tomato, comeback sauce, on an everything brioche bun is as delicious as it sounds. You can also stop in for lunch and nosh on goodies like the Chicken Po'Boy (spicy fried or grilled), Pimento Cheese Sandwich (grilled or not grilled), or the Chopped Collard "Caesar" made with cornbread croutons, preserved lemon, and cured egg yolk. Drooling yet?

Oh yeah, and they have live bluegrass and jazz music sometimes. Drinks, food, and music? It's definitely more than a cocktail bar.
