Friend of the Week: Hillary Dixon Barber
Hillary Dixon Barber
1. One hot mama of two cute kiddos.
2. Creative marketer and video game maven.
3. San Diego native.
4. Dedicated vegetarian (she makes one mean quesadilla).
How do we know each other?
We met freshman year of college at UCD, but I would say that our friendship started to skyrocket during houseboats weekend. Nothing brings you closer.
What's a day in the life of Hillary Barber like?
Go long on the 'running around like a chicken with its head cut off' metaphor. I have a 2 1/2 and a 4 year old so we head to the playground after preschool, I play ref to wrestling matches, there are a lot of moments of make believe which often involves San Diego and some squad of princesses, they race each other to check for eggs every day (we have 2 chickens - Dixie and Doodle), there is a lot of food prep and clean-up like a messy diner, their cousins Phoebe, Charlie, and his bear Bobby are play date staples, if luck is in my favor then I get to catch up with a friend, we experience more emotions in 20 minutes than a full viewing of Inside Out, and then my husband Brandon and I go for a wine and catch up on the day. I get to watch two little humans be themselves. It's all pretty awesome.
What's your greatest attribute?
Mi familia y mis amigos.
Favorite thing about living in The Bay Area?
Beach in 20 minutes, great coffee 10 minutes in any direction, wine and cows a short trip North, Crissy Field, the Giants, and creative, driven, good people all around the Bay. I'll also never tire of seeing the GG Bridge as you exit Robin Williams Tunnel.
one kind of food and drink for the rest of your life. go!
It's a total toss up between coffee and wine. You're putting me in a major Sophie's Choice situation, Car. That said, I'm going to have to go with a strong latte. It's my life's blood.
Favorite mommy moment?
There's something special that happens every once in a while when the weather is warm and the sun is just right (and I probably have a full glass of wine) and Brandon and I are hanging outside watching Addie & Beckett run around the backyard. They're wild, free, happy and safe all at the same time. It's pretty wonderful. I'm also very lucky to share the kid raising/wrangling experience with your bud, Steph, who also happens to be my twin sister. The cousin bond is strong and awesome.
Speaking of Steph, what's your favorite part about being a twin?
I'm lucky enough to have her as my best friend por vida. Steph is uniquely and wonderfully Steph - fun, sweet, super smarty, the biggest cheerleader, always there to listen and encourage, no judgement. She sees me at my highest highs and lowest lows and makes both better.
What's something that most people don't know about you?
I almost died in Capri, Italy but our mutual pal Maura saved me from the cold grips of a nurse wielding a needle in one hand and a cold prosciutto sandwich in the other.
What's your signature style?
I call it "Mom on the Edge." The style lives in the fuzzy space between I-gave-sweatpants and look-I-still-got-it-heels.
Funniest moment with me that you can remember?
So, so many, but every once in a while I flashback to you chasing Maura like an angry grandma swinging a purse in the garage under Nola's. I can't stop laughing.
First bucket list item that comes to mind?
Acquire a ranch equipped with lawn games for days, bunk-rooms for everyone, and a few of these:
Goddammit where did that tiny pillow go with the cross-stitched saying on it? Now I'lll never remember my life motto.
